Some Cases of Childhood Obesity

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

childhood obesityA study in the UK has tested for the first time that a genetic alteration can cause extreme obesity in children.

The SH2B1 gene deletion on chromosome 16, is responsible. Besides its scientific importance, this discovery could be the basis of preventive treatments and also serve to stop some blame.

A team of scientists from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), led by Sadaf Farooqi, sought deletions or extra copies of genes in children with extreme obesity (weighing around 100 kilos to ten years).

The results have been described by experts of very relevant, as found in obese children in the gene deletions described above. The work has been published in Nature.

The researchers worked on a population of 300 children from 10 years with extreme obesity, and compared their genes with those of 7366 normal weight children. SH2B1 gene plays a major role in regulating the body and the use of energy from food, with involvement of leptin and insulin molecules.

The deletion of this gene greatly increases appetite and therefore the weight of the sufferer. Hence the disproportionate obesity of children with this deficiency.

The consequences of this discovery are numerous and very important. First, it has great scientific significance and will move forward in the not too distant future, gene therapy solutions to combat obesity.

Low-carbohydrate Diets for Tension Reducing

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Low-carb dietsStudy finds low-carb diets are as effective as low in fat and calories to reduce weight but also reduces stress significantly. Another interesting finding of this study is to corroborate the effectiveness of group meetings to lose weight.

Most studies conducted to compare the relative effectiveness of different types of diets are made on population, except the very overweight is healthy. Among other reasons, is to avoid undesirable interference between the disease (and possibly medication that is taken as a result of it) and the variables measured.

However, this is not realistic, since obesity is often accompanied by various conditions, and one of the most common and important is hypertension, which in turn can cause serious diseases.

In a recent study conducted at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina (United States) has decided to include real patients, that is, people with lung diseases associated with obesity, like diabetes and heart disease. Counted with 146 volunteers, who divided into two groups.

The first was submitted to a diet very low in carbohydrates: less than 20 grams per day. The second was prescribed a diet low in calories and fat. In addition, components of the latter group took 120 milligrams of orlistat (trade names, Xenical and Alli), three times a day. As is known, this drug prevents the absorption of the fat ingested.

Whether they belong to one group or another, all participants had group meetings in which they were given instructions on feeding and making a follow-up results. These meetings were every two weeks during the first six months, and every 30 days thereafter.

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Physical And Mental ExercisesIt is undeniable that if we lose weight we have to move and burn energy. The body is like a factory that has to burn what you consume.

Now 50 percent of people are reluctant to exercise. While half thought that the gym is enough to the other half does not like to exercise.

If we think there are many alternatives like buying yoga videos or exercise and perform them in the house. Ah! But of course this requires the discipline and perseverance.
Another possibility is to walk every day for at least 30 minutes at a brisk pace. Here there is the question if this way works all the muscles.

What happens in this case with the back muscles are so important. Much of the world population suffers from back pain or bad posture problems. This is largely due to lack of muscles. We think that the muscles form a corset that support the spine. (more…)

Diuretics Contraindicated For Weight Loss

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

WEIGHT LOSSDiuretics are drugs that stimulate the renal excretion of water and electrolytes due to their action on ion transport in the nephron. The weight loss caused by their inappropriate use due to a decrease in the water compartment, and not to reduce body fat, so this loss is easily recoverable, which explains the contraindication of these drugs to reduce body weight .

By increasing the elimination of water increases, so the removal of minerals, especially potassium ion, can cause hypokalemia (hypokalemia), this being the major side effect. Hypokalemia can result in fatigue, malaise, muscle weakness of lower extremities. The most severe hypokalemia can cause progressive weakness, hypoventilation (due to involvement of respiratory muscles) and eventually complete paralysis. Weigh Loss For A Lifetime

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

weight lossMany people struggle with their weight for a lifetime. And this need not be so. There is a workout routine that can help you lose weight and keep it away from you. You just need to find one that suits your lifestyle and your personality. The options also include aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Each has its own strengths.

High intensity exercises are a great routine to lose weight. High-intensity routines focus on repetitive actions that result in temporary muscle fatigue. These exercises are very intense and short-lived. For this reason, high-intensity exercise should be performed no more than three times a week.

Your body needs time to recover between sessions before reloading. The number of repetitions is not as important in this type of exercise, if it is the intensity.

Anaerobic exercises are a form of high intensity exercise. During this training your body needs the energy stored in muscles. Some anaerobic exercises include jump rope, sprints and weight training. (more…)

Weight Down

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Weight DownWhen you begin a strict diet, the body enters a state known as war economy. By drastically restricting the caloric intake with food, the body automatically reduces the amount you need or spent to maintain the basic functions that keep you alive. This is known as decreased metabolism. You will spend less calories per day.
When the diet is inadequate, metabolism becomes depressed. Every time consuming fewer calories, which, after a significant initial decrease, that excites you, the body enters what is known as a plateau. This means that the weight loss stops.
Suppose that you have gone on a diet of 2,000 calories daily to 1100. Your body loses fluid, fat and some muscle proteins. But above all, in those first four or five kilos that decreased, which has lost is fluid.
Noting that no longer lose weight, because what you spend has adapted to what you consume, the road will further reduce calories in their diet, reaching 800 or 700. Again recorded a decrease of weight, fat loss and muscle mass. Until we reach the next plate.
What is the path from that point? Further reduce calorie intake, because, otherwise, their body weight will not be mobile. Consume only 500 or 600 calories, to fall in fasting diets, unsustainable over time. (more…)
